REPENTANCE
REPENTANCE. IS IT A
NECESSARY PART OF THE GOSPEL MESSAGE?
MATTHEW 3:1-2 NKJV
1 In those days John
the
Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
2 and saying,
"Repent, for
the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"
MATTHEW 4:17 NKJV
From that time
Jesus began
to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at
hand."
MATTHEW 9:12-13 NKJV
12 But when Jesus
heard
that, He said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a
physician, but those
who
are sick.
13 "But go and learn
what
this means: 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice.' For I did not
come to
call the righteous,
but
sinners to repentance."
MATTHEW 12:41 NKJV
"The men of Ninevah
will
rise in the judgement with this generation and condemn it,
because
they repented at the
preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.
MARK 1:4 NKJV
John came baptizing
in the
wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the
remission
of sins.
MARK 1:14-15 NKJV
14 Now after John
was put
in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the
kingdom of God,
15 and saying, "The
time is
fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and
believe in
the gospel."
MARK 2:17 NKJV
When Jesus heard
it, He
said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician,
but
those who are sick.
I did
not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."
MARK 6:12 NKJV
So they went out
and
preached that people should repent.
LUKE 3:3 NKJV
And he went into
all the
region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance
for the
remission of sins,
LUKE 5:31-32 NKJV
31 And Jesus
answered and
said to them, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but
those who are sick.
32 "I have not come
to call
the righteous, but sinners, to
repentance."
LUKE 10:13-15 NKJV
13 "Woe to you,
Chorazin!
Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done
in
you had been done in
Tyre
and Sidon, they would have repented a great while ago, sitting
in
sackcloth and ashes.
14 "But it will be
more
tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgement than for you.
15 "And you,
Capernaum, who
are exalted to heaven, will be thrust down to Hades.
LUKE 11:32 NKJV
"The men of Ninevah
will
rise up in the judgement with this generation and condemn it,
for
they repented at the
preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.
LUKE 13:1-5 NKJV
1 There were present
at
that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood
Pilate
had mingled with
their
sacrifices.
2 And Jesus answered
and
said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse
sinners than all
other
Galileans, because they suffered such things?
3 "I tell you, no;
but
unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
4 "Or those eighteen
on
whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think
that they
were worse sinners
than all
other men who dwelt in Jerusalem?
5 "I tell you, no;
but
unless you repent you will all likewise perish."
LUKE 15:7,10 NKJV
7 "I say to you that
likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who
repents
than
over ninety-nine
just
persons who need no repentance.
10 "Likewise, I say
to you,
there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one
sinner who
repents."
LUKE 24:46-47 NKJV
46 Then He said to
them,
"Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ
to suffer
and to rise from the
dead
the third day,
47 "and that
repentance and
remission of sins should be preached in His name to all
nations,
beginning at
Jerusalem.
ACTS 2:37-38 NKJV
37 Now when they
heard
this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the
rest of the
apostles, "Men and
brethren, what shall we do?"
38 Then Peter said
to them,
"Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of
Jesus
Christ for the
remission of
sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
ACTS 3:18-19 NKJV
18 "But those things
which
God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ
would
suffer, He has thus
fulfilled.
19 "Repent therefore
and be
converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of
refreshing may come
from
the presence of the Lord,
ACTS 5:30-31 NKJV
30 "The God of our
fathers
raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree.
31 "Him God has
exalted to
His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to
Israel
and forgiveness of
sins.
ACTS 8:20-22 NKJV
20 But Peter said to
him,
"Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift
of
God could be
purchased with
money!
21 "You have neither
part
nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the
sight of
God.
22 "Repent therefore
of
this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of
your heart
may be forgiven you.
ACTS 13:24 NKJV
"after John had
first
preached, before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all
the people
of Israel.
ACTS 17:30-31 NKJV
30 "Truly, these
times of
ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere
to
repent,
31 "because He has
appointed a day on which He will judge the world in
righteousness by the
Man whom He has
ordained.
He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the
dead."
ACTS 19:4 NKJV
Then Paul said,
"John
indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the
people that
they should believe
on Him
who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."
ACTS 20:20-21 NKJV
20 "and how I kept
back
nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught
you
publicly and from
house to
house,
21 "testifying to
Jews, and
also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our
Lord
Jesus Christ.
ACTS 26:18-20 NKJV
18 'to open their
eyes and
to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of
Satan to
God, that they may
receive
forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are
sanctified
by faith in Me.'
19 "Therefore, King
Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision,
20 "but declared
first to
those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the
region of
Judea, and then to
the
Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works
befitting
repentance.
ROMANS 2:4 NKJV
Or do you despise
the
riches of his goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not
knowing that
the goodness of God
leads
you to repentance?
2 CORINTHIANS 7:9-10
NKJV
9 Now I rejoice, not
that
you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance.
For you
were made sorry in a
godly
manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing.
10 For godly sorrow
produces repentance to salvation, not to be regretted; but the
sorrow
of the
world produces
death.
2 TIMOTHY 2:25 NKJV
in humility
correcting
those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them
repentance,
so that they may
know the
truth,
HEBREWS 6:4-6 NKJV
4 For it is
impossible for
those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly
gift,
and have become
partakers
of the Holy Spirit,
5 and have tasted
the good
word of God and the powers of the age to come,
6 if they fall away,
to
renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for
themselves
the Son of God, and
put Him
to an open shame.
HEBREWS 12:14-17
NKJV
14 Pursue peace with
all
men, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:
15 looking
diligently lest
anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of
bitterness
springing up cause
trouble,
and by this many become defiled;
16 lest there be any
fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of
food sold
his
birthright.
17 For you know that
afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was
rejected, for
he
found no place for
repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.
2 PETER 3:9 NKJV
The Lord is not
slack
concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is
longsuffering
toward us, not
willing that
any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
REVELATION 2:5 NKJV
"Remember therefore
from
where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else
I will
come quickly and
remove
your lampstand from its place--unless you repent.
REVELATION 2:16 NKJV
'Repent, or else I
will
come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword
of My
mouth.
REVELATION 2:21-22
NKJV
21 "And I gave her
time to
repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.
22 "Indeed I will
cast her
into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into
great
tribulation, unless
they
repent of their deeds.
REVELATION 3:3 NKJV
"Remember therefore
how
you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore
if you
will not watch, I
will come
upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will
come
upon you.
REVELATION 3:19 NKJV
"As many as I love,
I
rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.
REVELATION 9:20-21
NKJV
20 But the rest of
mankind,
who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the
works of
their hands, that
they
should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass,
stone, and
wood, which can
neither see
nor hear nor walk;
21 and they did not
repent
of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality
or their
thefts.
REVELATION 16:9-11
NKJV
9 And men were
scorched
with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has
power over these
plagues;
and they did not repent and give Him glory.
10 Then the fifth
angel
poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his
kingdom became
full of darkness;
and they
gnawed their tongues because of the pain.
11 And they
blasphemed the
God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did
not
repent of their
deeds.
