WHAT ARE WE SAVED
BY? WORKS OR GRACE?
ROMANS 3:21-31
21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the
law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law
and the Prophets,
22 even the righteousness of God which is through
faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all who
believe. For there is no difference:
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory
of God,
24 being justified freely by His grace through the
redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
25 whom God set forth to be a propitiation by His
blood, through faith, to demonstrate His
righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over
the sins that were previously
committed,
26 to demonstrate at the present time His
righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of
the one who has faith in Jesus.
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what
law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.
28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified
by faith apart from the deeds of the law.
29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not
also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the
Gentiles also,
30 since there is one God who will justify the
circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised
through faith.
31 Do we then make void the law through faith?
Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the
law.
ROMANS 11:5-6 RSV
5 ...chosen by grace.
6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on
the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be
grace.
1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-4
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the
gospel which I preached to you, which also you
received and in which you stand,
2 by which also you are saved, if you hold
fast that word which I preached to you-- unless you
believed in vain.
3 For I delivered to you first of all that
which I also received: that Christ died for our sins
according to the Scriptures,
4 and that He was buried, and that He rose
again the third day according to the Scriptures,
GALATIANS 2:16-21
16 "knowing that a man is not justified by the
works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even
we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified
by faith in Christ and not by the works
of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall by
justified.
17 "But if, while we seek to be justified by
Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ
therefore a minister of sin? Certainly not!
18 "For if I build again those things which I
destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
19 "For I through the law died to the law that I
might live to God.
20 "I have been crucified with Christ; if is no
longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the
life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son
of God, who loved me and gave Himself
for me.
21 "I do not set aside the grace of God; for if
righteousness comes through the law, then Christ
died in vain."
EPHESIANS 2:5-10
5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made
us alive together with Christ (by grace you have
been saved),
6 and raised us up together, and made us sit
together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
7 that in the ages to come He might show the
exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness
toward us in Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace you have been saved through
faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of
God,
9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ
Jesus for good works, which God prepared
beforehand that we should walk in them.
TITUS 3:4-8
4 But when the kindness and the love of God
our Saviour toward man appeared,
5 not by works of righteousness which we
have done, but according to His mercy He saved us,
through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy
Spirit,
6 whom He poured out on us abundantly
through Jesus Christ our Saviour,
7 that having been justified by His grace we
should become heirs according to the hope of
eternal life.
8 This is a faithful saying, and these
things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have
believed in God should be careful to maintain good works.
These things are good and profitable
to men.
