WHO, ACCORDING
TO SCRIPTURE, WROTE THE 5 BOOKS OF MOSES?
An attempt will be made to
determine what the 'opinion' of scripture is as to who
actually
wrote the five books of Moses.
Certain 'theologians' from a
particular perspective have alleged that some or all of
the books of
Moses were penned by 'scribes' or 'editors' somewhere
between 500 & 200 B.C.. The two books
that most often come into question, in their minds, are
the books of Leviticus & Deuteronomy,
which they allege to have been written in the
aforementioned period, or to have gradually evolved
more as 'commentaries' than as the writings of Moses. Some
of these 'theologians' even go so far
as to disallow all the books of Moses as the writings of
Moses.
The format will be to simply
quote the scriptures which ascribe these writings to a
particular
person, Moses, taken from the historical and cultural
records following the time period which
applies to the five books of Moses(that is all the books
of the Bible beginning with Joshua and
continuing into the new testament), and then to, if
applicable, determine the section from which
the reference is made and note that scripture with
indentation.
These references will be broken
down according to quotes which indicate that Moses was the
actual author, that Moses said or God commanded Moses, and
references which describe it as
"Moses Law" or "The Book of Moses", and again applying,
where possible, the applicable
scripture(s) which is(are) being referenced.
There will be a further listing
of references where the portion of the Law being quoted
comes
only from Leviticus or Deuteronomy, and can be found in no
other portion of the Law.

tribes of your fathers.

your

to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul,

13 'And if shall be that if you
diligently obey My commandments which I command you
today, to
love the Lord your God and serve Him with all
your heart and with all your soul,

children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh returned,
and
departed from the children of Israel at Shiloh, which is

by the hand of Moses.
NUMBERS 32:29
29 And Moses said to them: "If

4 However he did not execute their
children, but did as it is written in the Law in the Book

fathers; but a person shall die for his own
sin."

command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put
her away?"
8 He said to them, "Moses, because of
the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce
your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
DEUTERONOMY
24:1-4
1 "When a man takes a wife
and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor
in his eyes
because he had found some uncleanness in her,
and he writes her a bill of divorce, puts it in her
hand, and sends her out of his house,
2 "when she has departed
from his house, and goes and becomes another man's wife,
3 "if the latter husband
detests her and writes her a certificate of divorce,
puts it in her hand, and
sends her out of his house, or if the latter
husband dies who took her to be his wife,
4 "then her former husband
who divorced her must not take her back to be his wife
after she has
been defiled; for that is an abomination
before the Lord, and you shall not bring sin on the land
which the Lord your God is giving you as an
inheritance.

DEUTERONOMY
25:5
5 "If brothers dwell
together, and one of them dies and has no son, the widow

take
her as his wife, and perform the duty of a
husband's brother to her.
MARK 12:26
26 "But concerning the dead, that they rise,
have you not read in the book of Moses, in the

the God of Abraham, the God of
Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?
EXODUS 3:6,15
6 Moreover He said, "I am
the God of your father- the God of Abraham, the God of
Isaac, and
the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face,
for he was afraid to look upon God.
15 Moreover God said to Moses,
"Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: 'The Lord
God of
your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of
Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.
This is My name forever, and this is My
memorial to all generations.'

which I spoke to you while I was still with you,
that all things must be fulfilled which were written in

45 "Do not think that I shall accuse you to
the Father; there is one who accuses you- Moses, in

believe Me; for he wrote about Me.
47 "But if you do not believe his writings,
how will you believe My words?"

none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to
kill Me?"
JOHN 7:22-23
22 "Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not
that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and
you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
23 "If a man receives circumcision on the
Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be
broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man
completely well on the Sabbath?
GENESIS 17:12
12 "He who is eight days old
among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your
generations, he who is born in your house or
bought with money from any stranger who is not
your descendant.
LEVITICUS 12:3
3 'And on the eighth day
the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.
JOHN 8:5

that such should be stoned. But what do You say?"

10 'The man who commits adultery
with another man's wife, he who commits adultery with
his
neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the
adulteress, shall surely be put to death.

18:15,18,19
15 "The Lord your God will raise
up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your
brethren. Him you shall hear,
18 'I will raise up for them a
Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put
My words
in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all
that I command Him.
19 'And it shall be that whoever
will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I
will
require it of him.
ROMANS 9:15
15 For He says to Moses, "I will have mercy on
whomever I will have mercy, and I will have
compassion on whomever I will have compassion."
EXODUS 33:19
19 Then He said, "I will make all
My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the
name of
the Lord before you. I will be gracious to
whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on
whom I will have compassion."
ROMANS 10:5
5 For Moses writes about the
righteousness which is of the law, "The man who does those
things shall live by them."
LEVITICUS 18:5
5 'You shall therefore keep
My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he
shall live by
them: I am the Lord.
ROMANS 10:19
19 But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses
says: "I will provoke you to jealousy by those
who are not a nation, I will anger you by a foolish
nation."
DEUTERONOMY
32:21
21 They have provoked Me to
jealousy by what is not God; They have moved Me to anger
by
their foolish idols. But I will provoke them
to jealousy by those who are not a nation; I will move
them to anger by a foolish nation.
I CORINTHIANS 9:9
9 For it is written in the law of Moses,
"You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the
grain." Is it oxen God is concerned about?
DEUTERONOMY
25:4
4 "You shall not muzzle an
ox while it treads out the grain.
HEBREWS 9:19
19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to
all the people according to the law, he took the
blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and
hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself
and all the people,
EXODUS 24:5-6
5 Then he sent young men of
the children of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and
sacrificed
peace offerings of oxen to the Lord.
6 And Moses took half the
blood and put it in basins, and half the blood he
sprinkled on the
altar.
LEVITICUS 14:4,7
4 "then the priest shall
command to take for him who is to be cleansed two living
and clean
birds, cedar wood, scarlet, and hyssop.
7 "And he shall sprinkle it
seven times on him who is to be cleansed from the
leprosy, and shall
pronounce him clean, and shall let the living
bird loose in the open field.
NUMBERS 19:6,18
6 'And the priest shall
take cedar wood and hyssop and scarlet, and cast them
into the midst of
the fire burning the heifer.

hyssop and dip it in the water, sprinkle it on the tent,
on all the
vessels, on the persons who were there, or on
the one who touched a bone, the slain, the dead, or
a grave.
GOD COMMANDED MOSES
JOSHUA 1:3,7
3 "Every place that the sole of your
foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.
7 "Only be strong and very courageous,
that you may observe to do according to all the law
which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it
to the right hand or to the left, that
you may prosper wherever you go.
JOSHUA 1:13
13 "Remember the word which Moses the servant
of the Lord commanded you, saying, 'The
Lord your God is giving you rest and is giving you this
land.'
NUMBERS 32:20-28
JOSHUA 8:33
33 Then all Israel, with their elders and
officers and judges, stood on either side of the ark
before
the priests, the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant
of the Lord, the stranger as well as he
who was born among them. Half of them were in front of
Mount Gerizim and half of them in front
of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord had
commanded before, that they should bless
the people of Israel.
DEUTERONOMY
11:29
29 "And it shall be, when the
Lord your God has brought you into the land which you go
to
possess, that you shall put the blessing on
Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.
DEUTERONOMY 27:12-13
12 "These shall stand on Mount
Gerizim to bless the people, when you have crossed over
the
Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar,
Joseph, and Benjamin;
13 "and these shall stand on
Mount Ebal to curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan,
and
Naphtali.
JOSHUA 8:35
35 There was not a word of all that Moses had
commanded which Joshua did not read before all
the congregation of Israel, with the women, the little
ones, and the strangers who were living
among them.
JOSHUA 9:24
24 So they answered Joshua and said, "Because
it was certainly told your servants that the Lord
your God commanded His servant Moses to give you all the
land, and to destroy all the
inhabitants of the land from before you; therefore we were
very much afraid for our lives because
of you, and have done this thing.
EXODUS 23:31-33
DEUTERONOMY 7:1-2
JOSHUA 11:12
12 So all the cities of those kings, and all
their kings, Joshua took and struck with the edge of
the sword. He utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant
of the Lord had commanded.
20 For it was of the Lord to harden their
hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle,
that He might utterly destroy them, and that they might
receive no mercy, but that He might
destroy them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
NUMBERS
33:50-56
JOSHUA 11:15,23
15 As the Lord had commanded Moses his
servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua
did. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had
commanded Moses.
23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to
all that the Lord had said to Moses; and Joshua
gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their
divisions by their tribes. Then the land rested
from war.
JOSHUA 14:5,6,10
5 As the Lord commanded Moses, so the
children of Israel did; and they divided the land.
6 Then the children of Judah came to
Joshua in Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the
Kenizzite said to him: "You know the word which the Lord
said to Moses the man of God
concerning you and me in Kadesh Barnea.
9 "So Moses swore on that day, saying,
'Surely the land where your foot has trodden shall be
your inheritance and your children's forever, because you
have wholly followed the Lord my God.
10 "And now, behold, the Lord has kept me
alive, as He said, these forty-five years, ever since
the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel wandered in
the wilderness; and now, here I am
this day, eighty-five years old.
JOSHUA 17:4
4 And they came near before Eleazar the
priest, before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the
rulers, saying, "The Lord commanded Moses to give us an
inheritance among our brothers."
Therefore, according to the commandment of the Lord, he
gave them an inheritance among their
father's brothers.
JOSHUA 20:2
2 "Speak to the children of Israel,
saying: 'Appoint for yourselves cities of refuge, of which
I
spoke to you through Moses,
JOSHUA 21:2
2 And they spoke to them at Shiloh in
the land of Canaan, saying, "The Lord commanded
through Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with their
common-lands for our livestock."
NUMBERS 35:12
12 'They shall be cities of
refuge for you from the avenger, that the manslayer may
not die until
he stands before the congregation in
judgment.
JOSHUA 22:2
2 and said to them: "You have kept all
that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, and
have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you.
I KINGS 8:56
56 "Blessed be the Lord, who has given rest to
His people Israel, according to all that He
promised. There has not failed one word of all His good
promise, which He promised through His
servant Moses.
II KINGS 18:6,12
6 For he held fast to the Lord; he did
not depart from following Him, but kept His
commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses.
12 because they did not obey the voice of the
Lord their God, but transgressed His covenant and
all that Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded; and
they would neither hear nor do them.
II KINGS 21:8
8 "and I will not make the feet of
Israel wander anymore from the land which I gave their
fathers- only if they are careful to do according to all
that I have commanded them, and according
to all the law that My servant Moses commanded them."
I CHRONICLES 6:49
49 But Aaron and his sons offered sacrifices
on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of
incense, for all the work of the Most Holy Place, and to
make atonement for Israel, according to
all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.
