BOASTING
A study done in answer to the recurring problem of people boasting in their own religious efforts, their pastor, their church, their denomination, or particular evangelical leader.
SHOULD WE BOAST IN OUR OWN GOOD WORKS
SHOULD WE BOAST IN OTHERS GOOD WORKS
SHOULD WE BOAST IN OUR OWN GOOD WORKS
ROMANS 3:27 NKJV Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.
EPHESIANS 2:9 NKJV not of works, lest anyone should boast.
1 CORINTHIANS 1:28-29 RSV 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even the things that are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.
1 CORINTHIANS 3:6-7 NKJV 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.
LUKE 16:15 RSV "You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts; for what is exalted (NKJV "highly esteemed") among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
SHOULD WE BOAST IN OTHERS GOOD WORKS
1 CORINTHIANS 3:21 RSV So let no one boast of men. For all things are yours,
2 CORINTHIANS 10:12,15,16 RSV 12 Not that we venture to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another, and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding. 15 We do not boast beyond limit, in other men's labors; but our hope is that as your faith increases, our field among you may be greatly enlarged, 16 so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's field.
ROMANS 2:17 NKJV Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God,
ROMANS 2:23 NKJV You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law?
RELUCTANT BOASTING BY AN APOSTLE IN DEFENCE OF HIS POSITION AS A MINISTER OF THE WORD
2 CORINTHIANS 10:7-18 RSV 7 Look at what is before your eyes. If any one is confident that he is Christ's, let him remind himself that as he is Christ's, so are we. 8 For even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I shall not be put to shame. 9 I would not seem to be frightening you with letters. 10 For they say, "His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account. 11 Let such people understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present. 12 Not that we venture to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another, and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding. 13 But we will not boast beyond limit, but will keep to the limits God has apportioned us, to reach even to you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you; we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ. 15 We do not boast beyond limit, in other men's labors; but our hope is that as your faith increases, our field among you may be greatly enlarged, 16 so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's field. 17 "Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord." 18 For it is not the man who commends himself that is accepted, but the man whom the Lord commends.
1 CORINTHIANS 1:27-31 RSV 27 but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong, 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even the things that are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption; 31 therefore, as it is written, "Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord."
1 CORINTHIANS 3:6-7 NKJV 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.
2 CORINTHIANS 10:17-18 RSV 17 "Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord." 18 For it is not the man who commends himself that is accepted, but the man whom the Lord commends.
